DART is the first-ever mission dedicated to investigating and demonstrating one method of asteroid deflection by changing an asteroid\u2019s motion in space through kinetic impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>DART\u2019s target is the binary, near-Earth asteroid system Didymos, composed of the roughly 780-meter-diameter \u201cDidymos\u201d and the smaller, approximately 160-meter-size \u201cDimorphos,\u201d which orbits Didymos. <em>Because <\/em>DART will impact Dimorphos to change its orbit within the binary system<em>, <\/em>the DART Investigation Team will compare the results of DART\u2019s kinetic impact with Dimorphos to highly detailed computer simulations of kinetic impacts on asteroids. <em>As a result,<\/em> Everyone can support the DART mission by becoming a \u201cPlanetary Defender!\u201d Participants who take a short quiz with 5 questions will earn a certificate and badge they can download, print, and share on social media. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Understanding the dynamics of Dimorphos\u2019 orbit:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>However, understanding the dynamics of Dimorphos\u2019 orbit is important for reasons beyond ensuring DART\u2019s impact. If DART succeeds in altering Dimorphos\u2019 path, the moonlet will move closer toward Didymos, shortening the time it takes to orbit it. Measuring that change is straightforward, but scientists need to confirm that nothing other than the impact is affecting the orbit.
